This Land is Home to Me

In 1975 a Pastoral Letter was published - written by the people of Appalachia and signed by the twenty-five bishops whose dioceses make up the region that contains the Appalachian Mountains. Originally published on newsprint, it conveyed the heartbreaking problems faced by the people of the region as well as possible hopes for the future.

In 1976, as a response to This Land is Home to Me, The original organization of Young People Who Care was founded by a High School Youth Group and their Youth Minister, Sr. Therese Dush. Very little has changed in the past 50 years and Clearfield County, where Young People Who Care is located, is still the second poorest county in the State of Pennsylvania and This Land is Home to Me is still being read and implented.
It is the sacredness of each person, and God’s love for them in Jesus Christ, that defines them, not their poverty. Still this letter gives some context for the purpose of our Summer Service Trip.

It is well worth the read and can be found here, This Land is Home to Me.
